Inherited from Old Khmer ចង្វាត៑ (caṅvāt), ចង្វាត្ត៑ (caṅvātt), ចង្វត៑ (caṅvat), ចង្វត្ត៑ (caṅvatt), ចំវត្ត៑ (caṃvatt), ចន្វត៑ (canvat, “bounded terrain; bounded territory; circumscription”). Cognate with Thai จังหวัด (jang-wàt), Lao ຈັງຫວັດ (chang wat).
