Ancient Greek

Etymology

Unclear. Has been derived from ἄρκυς (árkus, “net”). Has also been derived from Proto-Indo-European, with cognates such as Russian раки́та (rakíta). Beekes argues for a Pre-Greek origin, comparing the Hesychian gloss ἄργετος (árgetos, “juniper”).
