References:

Mostly from Richard Sears' Chinese Etymology site (authorisation),
which in turn draws data from various collections of ancient forms of Chinese characters, including:

  • Shuowen Jiezi (small seal),
  • Jinwen Bian (bronze inscriptions),
  • Liushutong (Liushutong characters) and
  • Yinxu Jiaguwen Bian (oracle bone script).

Two theories exist:

  • According to Xu Zhongshu (徐中舒), it's a tool similar to (a knife) to divide things in half.
  • According to Lin Yiguang (林義光), it's the pictogram of grass growing; a root is visible at the bottom of the character.
