STEDT compares it to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m/s-prat ~ *pran (to sprinke; to spray), whence Burmese ဖျန်း (hpyan:, to spray, to sprinkle). On the other hand, Schuessler (2007) compares it to Mizo phuh (to blow out of the mouth), Tibetan ཕུ་བ (phu ba, to blow).
