Etymology

From Manchu ᠮᡝᡵᡤᡝᠨ (mergen, good hunter), from Mongolian ᠮᠡᠷᠭᠡᠨ (mergen, sharpshooter), so named by the Qing dynasty in reference to the area being part of the hunting grounds of the Daur, Solon and Oroqen peoples before the city's founding in 1685.
