  1. (medicine, anatomy) birth canal
(さん)(どう)(かん)(せん)sandō kansentransbirth canal infection; parturient infection
    • 1995, Sandra Ackerman, translated by Nakagawa Hachirō and Nagai Katsuya, Nō no shinseiki [Discovering the Brain], page 38:
Taiseki o fuyasanaku to mo nō no kinō o takamerareru kara de aru (ningen no yōji no zugai wa sandō o tsūka dekiru ōkisa de ari, sandō wa mata chokuritsu hokō ni hitsuyō na kokkaku o tōsu koto ga dekiru ōkisa de aru to keisan sareteiru).
This is sufficient to enhance brain function without increasing total body size (it is reckoned that the cranium of the human infant must pass through the birth canal, and the birth canal must be large enough to allow passage through a skeleton that still allows for upright gait).
