Etymology
edit“Foreign pepper”. The principal time of import to China was estimated to be during the Tang dynasty, and the source―per the miscellany Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang of the 9th century CE―was the Magadha Kingdom of India, where it was called 昧履支 (MC mwojH lijX tsye) locally; cf. Sanskrit मरिच (marica, “black pepper”).
