editOriginally from the Classic of Poetry (《詩》), 《豳風·狼跋》:
- 狼跋其胡,載疐其尾。 [Pre-Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: The Classic of Poetry, c. 11th – 7th centuries BCE, translated based on James Legge's version
- Láng bá qí hú, zǎi zhì qí wěi. [Pinyin]
- The wolf springs forward on his dewlap,
Or trips back on his tail.
狼跋其胡,载疐其尾。 [Pre-Classical Chinese, simp.]
Han Yu wrote in the 9th century:
- 然而公不見信於人,私不見助於友,跋前疐後,動輒得咎。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: c. 813, Han Yu, "On Encouraging Scholarship" (《進學解》)

- Yet you, in public affairs, fail to gain the trust of others. In private, none of your friends are willing to help you. You go forward and step on your dewlap, and step back only to trip on your tail. As soon as you move at all, you incur fault upon yourself.
