Chinese
editGlyph origin
editIdeogrammic compound (會意 / 会意) : 自 + 辛, hence "nose" + "chisel; knife to mark prisoners" to indicate the concept of criminal, perhaps with a reference to cutting the nose as a form of punishment. Later, 辠 was substituted by 𦋛 (> 罪), originally a net for fishing, due to the similarity of the former character to 皇, which represents the Emperor.
Definitions
editFor pronunciation and definitions of 辠 – see 罪 (“crime; vice; sin; etc.”). (This character is a variant form of 罪). |
