Etymology

From Middle Korean 고티〮다〮 (kwòthítá), from Old Korean 直体 (*KWOthi-, straighten, arrange neatly); equivalent to 곧— (got-, “to be straight”) + —기— (-gi-, causative suffix) + —다 (-da).

In the hangul script, first attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 고티〮다〮 (Yale: kwòthítá).
