First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 숨기〮다〮 (Yale: swùmkí-tá). From 숨— (sum-, to hide, intransitive) + —기— (-gi-, causative suffix) + —다 (-da, verb ending).
