Etymology

From a part of man'yōgana ; first attested c. 828. Became obsolete for representing e in the mid-Heian period when e merged with ye in spoken Japanese, being displaced by the kana formerly used for ye; later resurrected by linguists in the Edo period for representation of Old and Early Classical Japanese.
