Inherited from Sanskrit खण्ड (khaṇḍa), with semantic shift from "piece" to "thing" to "place". Probably influenced by the now archaic locational suffix -থান (-than), from Prakrit 𑀣𑀸𑀦 (thāna), from Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna); and possibly also influenced by Classical Persian خانه (xāna, house).
