Alkmaar
English
editProper noun
editAlkmaar
- A city and municipality in North Holland, Netherlands.
- A hamlet in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
- A town and resort in Commewijne District, Suriname.
Dutch
editEtymology
editFrom Middle Dutch Alkmare, from Old Dutch Alkmare, Alcmare, Alcmere, Allecmere. Compound of an unclear first element and either Old Dutch mere (“lake”) or mare (“watercourse”). The first element has been variously linked to Old Dutch alk (“crow”) and *alke (“mud”). A derivation from Proto-Germanic *alha (“temple”) or *alha (“moose”) is unlikely. Compare Alkemade.
