editFrom Dutch Antarctica, from New Latin Antarctica, from Ancient Greek ἀνταρκτικός (antarktikós), from ἀντ- (ant-, “ant-, against, opposed”) + ἀρκτικός (arktikós, “Arctic”), from Ancient Greek ἄρκτος (árktos, “bear”). The spelling change in Indonesian was proposed/accepted in January 2017 by Adi Budiwiyanto, previously spelled as Antartika.
