editFrom Middle High German ūzganc, from Old High German ūzgang (“exit, outgang”), from Proto-Germanic *ūtgangaz. Equivalent to aus- + Gang, also analyzable as deverbal from ausgehen. Cognate with Dutch uitgang (“exit”), English outgang (“egress, exit”). More at outgang.
