First attested as De Niuwe ofte Bovenste Veen Dijk Sloot in 1723. Derived from boven (upper) and a compound of veen (peat bog, marsh) and sloot (ditch). Named after a nearby ditch. The element boven was added to distinguish the settlement from Beneden Veensloot.
