Borrowed from Portuguese Ceilão, from Old French Seilan (Marco Polo), probably a back-formation from Arabic سَرَنْدِيب (sarandīb), from Persian سرندیپ (sarandip), from Prakrit *𑀲𑀻𑀳𑀮𑀤𑀻𑀯 (*sīhaladīva), from Sanskrit सिंहलद्वीप (siṃhaladvīpa).
