editFrom Ancient Greek Δημήτριος (Dēmḗtrios, literally “belonging to Δημήτηρ (Dēmḗtēr), the earth goddess”); from Δή (Dḗ), an early form of γῆ (gê, “earth”) + μήτηρ (mḗtēr, “mother”). Doublet of Dimitris and Dmitry.
