editFrom Low German Ganter, from a merger of Middle Low German gante and ganre, respectively from Proto-Germanic *ganutô and *ganzô. The former is cognate with Middle High German ganze (whence the southern Ganser), Dutch gent, English gannet. The latter is cognate with English gander.
