editBy renewed adaptation to Beere from earlier and still dialectal Himper, by assimilation (as in Wimper) from Middle High German hintber, from Old High German hintberi, from Proto-West Germanic *hindibaʀi. Compare (dialectal) English hindberry, (dialectal) Dutch hennebes, hinnebes, Danish hindbær. Equivalent to Hinde (“hind, doe”) + Beere (“berry”).
