Lokal n (strong, genitive Lokales or Lokals, plural Lokale)

  1. A restaurant, especially when small and/or traditional; a pub that serves hot food; an inn.
  2. (in certain compounds) A room or facility used for public services.

Usage notes

  • Note that Lokal is a false friend and does not mean "local". The general word to refer to a "local" is Einheimischer/Einheimische if you are referring to a person who was born somewhere and has always lived there.
  • To refer to the same meaning the same as the English locale, on the other hand, there are Ort m and Örtlichkeit f.
