editFrom Middle High German quappe, kape, kope, from Old High German quappo, kwappo (“burbot, eelpout”) (also Old High German quappa, kwappa (“tadpole, burbot”)), from Proto-West Germanic *kwabbā, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeh₂bʰ- (“to sink, submerge, dive”). Cognate with Saterland Frisian Kwabbe (“burbot, eelpout; tadpole”), West Frisian kwabbe, kwab, Dutch kwab (“burbot; lobe”).
