  1. (chemistry) A relation which states that given an ideal solution and a gas in equilibrium, the partial pressure of each component in the gas equals its mole fraction in the solution multiplied by its equilibrium vapor pressure.

Examples
  • An ideal mixture consisting of 90% water (Pvap = 23.77 mmHg) and 10% ethanol (Pvap = 58.71 mmHg) by moles will have a vapour pressure of about (0.9)(23.77) + (0.1)(58.71) = 27.26 mmHg.
