editFrom an earlier *stálan, from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂-o-lo-m, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand [up]”). Cognate with Sanskrit स्थलम् (sthalam, “firm ground, foundation”) and further akin to Proto-Germanic *stōlaz (“seat, stool, throne”) (full-grade).
