Proto-Celtic

edit

Etymology

edit

A derivative of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to turn, bend),[1] more precisely from *kor- (putting, throwing) +‎ *-ets (noun-forming suffix), This word would literally mean "[something] put/thrown [together]".

Matasović presumes substrate origin after an unsatisfactory search for other European cognates.[2] He does not consider the possibility of an internal Celtic or Indo-European derivation, despite citing De Bernardo Stempel (who makes one) in his entry.
