Etymology

A derivative of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to turn, bend”), more precisely from *kor- (“putting, throwing”) +‎ *-ets (noun-forming suffix), This word would literally mean "[something] put/thrown [together]".

Matasović presumes substrate origin after an unsatisfactory search for other European cognates. He does not consider the possibility of an internal Celtic or Indo-European derivation, despite citing De Bernardo Stempel (who makes one) in his entry.
