From Proto-Indo-European *tetḱ-ló-s, or *tétḱ-dʰlo-m, with cluster simplification, both from *tetḱ- (“to cut, hew; to create”). Cognate with Old Irish tál (“adze”), Proto-Slavic *tesla (“adze”).
