Uncertain;[1] possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dʰowh₂-o-m, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewh₂- (smoke, haze).[2][3] Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuHmás (mist; smoke), Lithuanian dúlis (mist).
