editFrom lost *fan- + *-ją, from *pen- (“moist, wet, mud, swamp, water”). Cognate with Old Prussian pannean (“bog”), Proto-Celtic *ɸenos (“water”); possibly also related to Proto-Germanic *funhtijaz (“wet, damp”), Old English fyne (“mold”).[1][2]
