Etymology

Perhaps from Pre-Proto-Germanic *lengʷʰom, from Proto-Indo-European *lengʷʰ-. Compare Proto-Slavic *lǫgъ (“meadow”) from Proto-Balto-Slavic *lanˀgas. The original meaning may have been *“unused land”; Kroonen compares the semantic development of *haiþī (“heath”). The same semantic pairing exists in modern Irish fraoch.
