From Proto-Indo-European *dedru-, *derdru-, a reduplicative form derived from *der- (to split, separate, crack, chafe, flay). Compare Sanskrit दद्रू (dadrū, a skin eruption, a type of leprosy) and दद्रुक (dadruka, leprosy).
