Etymology

edit

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *uź, cognate with Lithuanian , Latvian uz. Further etymology is disputed. Derksen tries to derive from a proto-form *ups, but fails to see how it could account for the Baltic facts. Snoj considers relation to Proto-Indo-European *úd(s) (out), which otherwise yields Proto-Slavic *vy-. Compare Proto-Germanic *uz.

Preposition

edit

*vъz[1][2][3]

  1. (+accusative) instead of, in return for
  2. (+accusative) up, above
  3. (+accusative) by, beside

Usage notes
