Proto-Uralic

edit

Etymology

edit

Likely originally a compound with *ëppe (father-in-law) as the second member. The first member is not known as an independent word, but may be also reflected in Proto-Samic *vuonēm (mother-in-law) (perhaps from *ënɜ + *emä). In such a case, the word may originally have been a dvandva compound (mother-in-law + father-in-law to mean "In-law" in general).

Noun

edit

*ënɜppe

  1. in-law
