editFrom Middle Low German roche, ruche, possibly a derivative of Proto-Germanic *rūhwaz (“rough”), but often thought to be from a substrate (compare also Latin raia). Cognate with Dutch rog, Old English reohhe, ruhha, and, via Old French, English roach (“a fish”).
