editEtymology
editFrom French SIDA. The adjectival sense for clothing comes from Swedish SIDA (“Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency”), an organisation from which Vietnam received development assistance funding after the Vietnam War. Its negative connotation of the word is influenced by the aforementioned borrowing from French.[1]
