Pronunciation of hybrid cultivars etc.
edit@Chuck Entz, DCDuring: Tell us, please, how the sign is read aloud in these contexts! Even if I were to take recorded botany lessons right now you still should be surer about it, so it is easier, more efficient and more reliable to ask. Fay Freak (talk) 21:23, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
- I would just pronounce it as the letter "x", but I can't say that's how anyone else might say it. Taxonomic names are notoriously variable in actual usage- no two people pronounce them exactly the same. Chuck Entz (talk) 21:32, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
- Some possibilities are the pronunciations of by, cross, and x (all mentioned is discussion at Reddit, as well as the possibility of not pronouncing it at all). A horticulture site has it that Forsythia ×intermedia is pronounced like "hybrid species Forsythia intermedia. I cannot yet be sure of prevailing practice(s), but Missouri Botanical Garden ("MoBot") and Dave's Gardens both use x ("ex") in their pronunciations (eg. http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=291997&isprofile=1&basic=Forsythia). I haven't checked whether any other hybrids listed there use the "ex" pronunciation. DCDuring (talk) 22:18, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
