Etymology for handcuffs

edit

John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) includes darbies for handcuffs and also Johnny Darbies (which I'm having trouble citing) for policemen, apparently from gendarmes. Could this be the origin? Equinox 02:30, 9 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

US usage?

edit

"Darbies" for handcuffs has the usage label "UK", but two of the four quotations are from an American author. Perhaps it was formerly used in the US but has dropped out of use there? — This unsigned comment was added by 2A02:AA1:1619:4E91:2A19:264B:9C9F:F4D (talk).
