Many sects use it against any Muslim not in their sect, but that seems like a case of (mis)using the general sense to say "you're No True Scotsman Muslim", doesn't it? - -sche (discuss) 15:02, 9 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I think this is covered by the definition of "non-Muslim"; the implication of calling Shi'a (or any other sect) "kafir" is that you do not consider them to be Muslims. Determining whether they are in fact Muslims is not a job for lexicographers. - Aperiarcam
