From Wotan (“Odin”) +‎ -s- +‎ Tag (“day”), a learned calque of Middle Low German wôdenesdach and other descendants of Proto-West Germanic *Wōdanas dag. Doublet of earlier Wodenstag, which is directly from Middle Low German. Compare English Wednesday.
