From Old Galician-Portuguese Johanna, from Latin Johanna, variant of Joanna, from Koine Greek Ἰωάννα (Iōánna), from Hebrew יוֹחָנָה (Yôḥānāh, literally God is gracious), the feminized form of יְהוֹחָנָן (Yəhōḥānān) which produced Xoán.
