From Middle High German anebeten, from Old High German anabetōn. Equivalent to an- (on) +‎ beten (pray). Cognate with Dutch aanbidden. For structural similarity compare Latin adoro.

  • Particularly in Catholic contexts, a precise distinction must be made between beten zu (to pray to) and anbeten (to worship). While the former may be done towards God, angels, and saints, the latter is due to God alone.
