From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ántaras, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂énteros.[1]

Cognate with Latvian ùotrs (second), Old Prussian antars (second, other), Proto-Slavic *vъ(n)torъ, Proto-Germanic *anþeraz, Sanskrit अन्तर (ántara).
