editEtymology
editDerived from the present stem aplok- of aplocīt (“to wrap around”), itself from ap- + locīt (“to fold, to bend”), + -ne, with an intermediate epenthetic s. The word was coined at the end of the 19th century but only became popular in the 20th century, replacing the earlier borrowing kuverts.[1]
