From Middle Low German arbeit, German Arbeit, from Proto-Germanic *arbaidiz, possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃órbʰos (orphan). Compare Norwegian Bokmål arbeid, Swedish arbete, and Faroese arbeiði. A native form of the word is found in Old Danish ærvede, Old Norse erfiði (still in Swedish arvode (salary)).
