From Middle Welsh arð, from Proto-Brythonic *arð, from Proto-Celtic *ardwos (compare Irish ard), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erdʰwós, from *h₃erdʰ-. Cognate with Latin arduus (high; difficult) and Ancient Greek ὀρθός (orthós, upright, straight).
