From Proto-Central Philippine *balaŋaw (rainbow). Compare Bikol Central balangaw, Cebuano bangaw, Hiligaynon balangaw, Waray-Waray balangaw, and Tausug bāngaw. The senses triumphal arch and congratulation may be related to the Noahic Covenant.
