editPronunciation
edit- (Standard Tagalog) IPA(key): /baˈsahan/ [bɐˈsaː.hɐn̪]
- Rhymes: -ahan
- Syllabification: ba‧sa‧han
Etymology 1
editEither from the following:
- From Malay basahan (“daily used items or clothes”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *basəq-an (“thing that gets wet”). Can also be analyzed as basah (“wet”) + -an.
- From basa (“wet”) + -han. However, the expected conjugation would be *basaan since basa ends with a glottal stop, and the root being basa (“reading”) is unlikely. Possibly an irregular conjugation.
Compare Kapampangan basan (“rag”), Maranao basa'an (“bathing suit”), Tausug basaanan (“clothing worn while one is bathing”), and Old Javanese basahan (“piece of cloth which is not taken off while bathing”).
