editInherited from Ottoman Turkish بیاغی (bayağı),[1][2][3] from Common Turkic *bayakı, from Proto-Turkic *baya (“previously mentioned, recent, former”) + *ok (“emphasis postposition”).[4][5][6] Cognate with Azerbaijani bayağı, Kazakh баяғы (baäğy, “same, old”), Karakhanid بَیا اُقْ (bayā oq), Uyghur بايا (baya), Uzbek boya, boyagi.
