Probably a nominalization of the present participle (formed with -i, a variant of -e (obsolete present-participle suffix)) of an unattested stem. The stem is of onomatopoeic origin and is possibly the same as in bíbelődik; it may also be related to the stem of babrál and babirkál. First attested in 1566. The term developed alongside bibe through a semantic split.[1]
