Inherited from Latin cata, from Ancient Greek κατά (katá). The normal result in old Romanian would have been *cătă, later *căte, and was influenced by cât (see the above etymology). Compare Spanish and Portuguese cada, Occitan cadun, French chacun, Italian cadauno.
